Atlantic City Wins $996,000 Grant For
Atlantic Avenue Improvement Project

Atlantic City, New Jersey – New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox announced that the City of Atlantic City has been awarded a $996,000 grant to fund streetscape improvements along Atlantic Avenue.
Mayor Don Guardian said, “We are excited to have this funding so that we can continue to make aesthetic and safety improvements on Atlantic Avenue. Many thanks to the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization, NJDOT, our State Legislators, Atlantic County, CRDA, Main Street Atlantic City and the Greater Atlantic City Chamber for supporting this important initiative.
In 2013, the City received a NJDOT grant for $400,000 to start to improve the Atlantic Avenue streetscape. This first phase of the Atlantic Avenue improvements will be going out to bid in the next few months.
These grants are very competitive. This year the State received 146 applications totaling more than $97 million. With only $15.5 million available for this year’s program, the State was able to fund only 28 projects. Rutala Associates, a local planning firm that has been retained by the City to procure grants for various projects, prepared the grant application.
The plans for Atlantic Avenue includes LED decorative lighting, trees, sidewalk pavers, bike racks, solar parking kiosks, benches, plant containers, trash and recycling containers and other enhancements. A wayfinding sign system will be used to direct pedestrians to transit alternatives and points of interest.
Mayor Guardian noted, “These improvements will provide a framework of design elements that promote a safe, friendly, vibrant and inviting streetscape environment. These funds are critical in revitalizing the downtown and spurring economic growth in Atlantic City.”
The City of Atlantic City has held a series of public meeting recently to develop a plan for the Central Business District to connect Tanger Outlets
